Department of Chemistry, IIST has been conducting the series of the National/International conferences (NCMST/ICMST) every year. The first conference of NCMST/ICMST series, the “International Conference on Recent Trends in Materials Science and Technology (ICMST)-2010”, was jointly organized by IIST and MRSI during 2010. After the huge success of ICMST-2010, in the subsequent years, Department of Chemistry was conducting the national and international conferences in collaboration with Materials Research Society of India (MRSI), Thiruvananthapuram Chapter and Society of Polymer Science India (SPSI), Thiruvananthapuram Chapter.
Indian Institute of Space Science and Technology (IIST), a Deemed to be University under Section 3 of the UGC Act 1956, functions as an autonomous body under the Department of Space (DoS), Government of India and is the first of its kind in the country, to offer high-quality education in undergraduate, post-graduate, doctoral and post-doctoral levels in areas relevant to space sciences, space technology and space applications. The institute has the enviable reputation of having had Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, the renowned technocrat and the former President of India as its very first Chancellor. Dr. B.N. Suresh, the founder Director of IIST is the current Chancellor. The IIST faculty members work in close collaboration with scientists/engineers of DoS/ISRO in various projects in diverse aspects of Space Science and Technology.

Department of Chemistry offers PhD and M.Tech programme in Materials Science and Technology and guides research projects, where strong foundations are laid to facilitate the students to design and develop novel materials and processes to meet future technological challenges. The department also offers courses for B.Tech students. Since its inception, the Department of Chemistry has done pioneering research in the field of materials including Polymers, Nanomaterials, Biomaterials, Smart Materials, High Temperature Materials, and Composites. Department of Chemistry has established state of the art research facilities under “Centre for Nanoscience and Energy materials” to facilitate development of novel materials for wide range of applications including Sensors, Electronics, Batteries, Supercapacitors, Drug Delivery and EMI Shielding.
Materials Research Society of India (MRSI) is an interdisciplinary professional body, based in Bengaluru, which is dedicated to stimulate accelerated growth of indigenous research and development in the area of materials science and engineering and their applications. MRSI organizes technical seminars and international conferences to encourage and fortify materials research in the country. Its members include Life members, Annual members, Honorary members and Patron members amounting to a total of around 3000 members currently. The Thiruvananthapuram chapter is one of the most active chapters of MRSI and has members from leading institutes in Kerala such as VSSC, NIIST, SCTIMST, IISER, CUSAT, University of Kerala, NIT Calicut and IIST.
The eleventh edition of the National Conference on Recent Trends in Materials Science and Technology (NCMST-2024) focusses on the theme - 'Materials for Sustainability'. The organizing committee of NCMST-2024, invites researchers, academicians, scientists, and students to submit abstract of their original research. This edition of the NCMST aims at presenting current research in the area of Materials Science and Technology and would highlight the latest advances and strategies for the design and development of novel materials and processes with an emphasize on sustainable environment and energy. The conference aims to bring together scientists, engineers, academicians, researchers and industry experts across the nation and would provide them the opportunity to exchange new ideas, share experiences and establish research or business collaborations. The conference would host plenary and invited lectures and technical sessions comprising oral and poster presentations in the areas of:
Nanomaterials
Composite materials
Energy materials
High Temperature Materials
Metals and alloys
Optoelectronic Materials
Polymers and blends
Sensors
Smart and functional materials
Soft and biomaterials
